What is Compression Set?
Compression set refers to the amount of pressure or stress a material can withstand without breaking or losing its shape. Rubber, both synthetic and natural, retains a low compression set due to its flexibility. Because of this, rubber matting is often used for protective applications involving high pressure compression, such as in gasket and seal application. Furthermore, this property gives rubber a longer life compared to other materials. Here are a few applications that exemplify rubber’s low compression set:
- Gaskets: Rubber gaskets are commonly used in industrial setting because of their flexibility and high compressibility. Gaskets are essentially barriers put between two hard objects to prevent them from hitting or scraping against one another and causing damage. Industrial gaskets can be used for highly abrasive applications where they are subjected to extreme pressure. Other materials, such as plastic, cannot offer the compressibility needed to provide adequate padding and protection. Rubber is the best material used for gaskets because it is a resilient material that will last a long time.
- Gym Mats: Gym floors are exposed to repeated and heavy impacts constantly on a daily basis. Without protection, these weights and fitness machines can cause some serious damage to the floor’s surface. Rubber is the ideal material for use as gym mats due to their low compression set. Due to rubber’s low compression set, it is able to absorb the force of impact and prevent damaging forces from reaching the subflooring. Furthermore, heavy fitness machines can be placed on these mats to protect the floors from damaging vibrations emitted by these machines when in use.
- Anti-Fatigue Mats: Rubber retains excellent anti-fatigue properties due to its low compression set. Standing or walking for long periods of time, whether at home or in the workplace, can put an unnecessary amount of strain and pressure on your leg joints and lower back. Rubber provides a cushioned surface that is more comfortable to stand and walk on that will help alleviate some of the pressure. Its low compression set allows rubber anti-fatigue mats to bend to the weight of whatever is on its surface to provide a comfortable barrier for hard surfaces.
Rubber’s low compression set makes it the ideal material for a wide array of applications ranging from industrial to residential. Its durability and resilience make it a reliable option for use in these settings without the worry of damage.
