Seals and Gaskets: An Introduction

Seals and gaskets are valued products in the industrial world due to their important job of protecting equipment or floor surfaces. These products are generally made from synthetic rubber materials, such as neoprene and EPDM, for added strength and durability in the midst of heavy-duty and abrasive environments. Both neoprene and EPDM rubber variations feature enhanced strength and resistance against chemicals; however, neoprene offers oil-resistant properties that EPDM cannot match. Despite these differences, both neoprene and EPDM are excellent options for a durable seal or gasket; it all depends on the type of application.

Neoprene Seals and Gaskets

Neoprene is one of the most popular materials for use as seals and gaskets due to its strength, chemical-resistance, and resistance against greases and oils. Neoprene was first invented to replace natural rubber as an oil-resistant alternative. In the industrial workplace, oils and chemicals are a common source of spills. Due to its oil-resistance, neoprene seals and gaskets are ideal for workplaces that are exposed to such damaging materials. Furthermore, neoprene features a low compression set meaning it can be put under extreme pressure for extended periods of time without disfiguration.

EPDM Seals and Gaskets

EPDM is a material that is similar to neoprene in its strength, durability, and chemical-resistance; however, unlike neoprene, EPDM is not resistant to greases and oils. Seals and gaskets made out of EPDM rubber is ideal for outdoor use due to its superior resistance to outdoor damaging factors (i.e., marine boat docks). Since EPDM has a high degree of chemical-resistance, seals and gaskets made from this material can also be used in industrial environments where they can be exposed to chemicals.
